KVPT's Earthquake Response

Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust (KVPT), founded in 1991, remains the first and only international charity dedicated to safeguarding Nepal’s architectural patrimony.  Our presence on the ground during the catastrophic earthquakes of 2015 allowed our team to play a significant role in rescue, storage and shoring-up efforts. At present, our much-expanded mission includes not only the storage, cataloguing, and repair of thousands of rescued architectural fragments--as well as professional planning, rebuilding, advocacy, and fundraising efforts.

The historical buildings and temples of the Kathmandu Valley are an irreplaceable art and cultural treasure both world-class and largely intact, key to Nepalese identity and national economic engines. Our track record celebrates more than 50 building projects restored in cooperation with Nepal’s Department of Archaeology, and supported by a diverse mix of local, international, private, public, and institutional donors.

See images below illustrating both recent earthquake damage as well as our work in progress on our 8-year Earthquake Response Campaign to restore the Patan Darbar, Nepal's most important cultural attraction and one of the finest historic urban ensembles in South Asia.

In response to KVPT’s post-earthquake application, the cultural sites of the Kathmandu Valley have been included on the 2016 World Monuments Watch.

A paragraph here to describe the urgency of the initiative - if we can raise $150,000, that will keep projects running through Spring 2018, if we can reach a goal of $1.5 million, that will help us in a shortfall to complete XXX Projects - Help us save 23 monuments by 2023!
